Meet Heather Henson

Heather Henson is a floral artist who grows specialty cut flowers, designs for weddings, and sells retail bouquets as owner/operator of Boreal Blooms, based in Cold Lake, Alberta.

Established in 2013, Boreal Blooms specializes in direct-to-consumer bouquets through local markets and a long-running bouquet share program. "Dried flowers are my passion, and I love creating dried flower weddings for brides who want local flowers that last," she says. Heather is a wife and mother to four mostly-grown children. She also works as a doula and is the co-host of The Sustainable Flowers Podcast.

  1. What is your astrological sign or Chinese zodiac year? Taurus.

  2. What book(s) are on your bedside table right now? So many! "The Women," by Kristin Hannah, "Orwell's Roses," by Rebecca Solnit, "The Nurture Revolution," by Greer Kirshenbaum, "The Sun and Her Flowers," by Rupi Kaur, "Floramama," by Chloe Roy (shoutout to Quebec's best flower grower!) and "Next Level," by Dr. Stacy Sims.

  3. What do you want our guests to know about Canada's local flower/Slow Flowers or horticulture and gardening scene? What I want people to know about the Canadian flower scene is that we can supply any event, any time of the year, with local, fresh or dried flowers. There is no need for imports, ever.

  4. Share something that you're excited about exploring in your floral enterprise this year? I am excited to create more dried flower weddings this year for my eco-conscious and local flower-loving Alberta brides!

  5. What is the craziest or most clever thing you've done to pack flowers or plants for travel? The craziest thing I've ever done is drive 14 hours straight in 36 C temps (97 F) with my AC blasting to get British Columbia-grown peonies back to Cold Lake, Alberta, safely. Never again, now that my peonies are mature!
